Abstract

Geographical areas of our country contain different socio-economic characteristics, representing specific elements for regional and sustainable development projects. Sustainable development represents the possibility of optimization of the economic development of a territory without affecting the environment. Therefore the most important aspect is to preserve the environment quality for the next generations. Regional development represents the general policy of central and local bodies which aims to improve the economic performances of some geographic areas organized in Development Regions, benefiting of the Government, the European Union and other national and international authorities support. The implementation proceedings of regional development policy were initiated in 1997, when the Romanian Government approved The Green Charta of Regional Development in Romania and it was continued during the period of 1998-1999 with the elaboration of the necessary institutional frame and legislative background. Regional development policy, as integrated part of the reform process and the adhesion process to the European Union, must secure the fact that the regional development programs promoted by the Romanian Government and by each region itself will allow a well-balanced development for a socio economic cohesion.
